Rameswaram – A Pilgrimage

[adrotate group=”1″]

Rameswaram, a religious island in India is considered amongst the holiest places on Earth. The whole town is centered around the main temple (Ramanathaswamy Temple). The temple is huge and has long corridors..in fact longest in the world, with 1200 pillars in just the outer corridor.

This is one of the places where people can actually see and relate to the places mentioned in the Ramayana (one of the two great epics of India). The town is always engulfed in spirituality and I happened to visit Rameswaram during the busiest holy month of the year. My journey started in Chennai, India from where I took a train. The train arrived at 5 A.M early in the morning. It was still dark outside but the town was fully awake and I could feel the buzz in the atmosphere. I could hear the ocean coupled with drum beats and temple bells. My hotel fortunately was at the prime location of the town, 50 ft. from the ocean and 100 ft. from the temple!

After performing the rituals on the first day. The second day for me was, me and my camera in the center, to my left were hundreds of people taking a holy dip in the sea, to my right were thousands of people waiting in the queue for the temple doors to open. To my front were priests performing rituals and to my back were hundreds of buses, taxis, which had bought those people to the town . Click! Click! Click! was what I did the whole day. The town also has a lot of different places where one can visit to find relics of the actual incidents that are mentioned in the Ramayana epic. A few like the footprints of lord Ram, stones that float on water (these were supposedly used to build a 22 KM “Adam’s Bridge”). In the evening, I relaxed by the sea to watch the sun go down.

The next sun rise transported me back to the urban life.

This for you is !ncredible !ndia.

Dates: 14th – 15th August 2010
